DIFFERENT TYPES OF EFFICACY IN ALD

Self-efficacy applies to specific challenges, problems, and opportunities that one faces over time. As we have seen in Chapter 4, where “means efficacy” (having the right tools) and “collective efficacy” (the power of group confidence) was introduced, this important psychological capacity of self-efficacy can take many different forms. They can be applied and have powerful implications for resulting performance. Here are some examples of different types of efficacies that are particularly relevant to ALD:

High moral efficacy: I have confidence in taking a stand on what I believe is ethically the right thing to do.

High leader efficacy: I have confidence in assuming and effectively carrying out my leadership role.

High follower efficacy: I am confident in doing my job effectively and, if need be, can go to my leader to discuss anything.

High task efficacy: I have confidence that I can do a specific task successfully.

Although Bandura’s original conception of efficacy was task specific, there is increasing theory-building and research findings that leaders in particular may develop a high level of what is called “general efficacy.” This means that a leader’s efficacy or confidence in being successful may at least generalize across a domain of similar situations. For example, a leader may have high general efficacy for developing followers into becoming leaders. Such general efficacy allows the leader’s confidence to “broaden and build” (just like positive emotions have been shown to do).

Combined with the fact that efficacy can be developed—through experienced success, vicariously and modeling successful relevant others, verbal persuasion and positive feedback, and psychological and physiological arousal and wellness—we hope you see why we have given so much attention to this relatively sophisticated but often overlooked psychological strength.

ALD built around specific and general efficacy provides leaders with a stronger base to feel confident that if they focus on doing or changing something, they have a reasonable probability of being successful. This can be very powerful in choosing the “right fork” in the road.
